When does a callus form between the toes?
In general, little is said about calluses and their treatment in the surgical community. The situation is different with the techniques of gastrectomy and the suture of the duodenal stump! This is true! And that's just a small thing. Go to the bathhouse, take a pair, take a pumice stone, rub off the callus and it's gone. No, no... That doesn't always help.
Calluses are colloquially known as characteristic lesions in the friction area of the skin. The skin adapts to prolonged physical activity and the epidermis thickens. This is a normal physiological process. It is enough to work with a hammer in the country for a few days to notice the typical thickening of the skin on the hands. The skin adapts in this way. The skin in the sole area is most susceptible to this protective keratosis. And that is, in principle, obvious. In the distant past, our ancestors did not know shoes, and modern man cannot imagine walking barefoot, for example, in the forest or in the fields. However, studies have shown that it takes only two weeks for the skin on your feet to harden and that walking barefoot is quite comfortable and pain-free.
Thick where it rubs off
This protective keratinization process is not always beneficial. There are two problems here: first, we wear shoes (and shoes are a completely different matter), and second, people have quite a lot of anatomical injuries to the foot (like flat feet). And calluses can be a problem.
And that's exactly what I want to write about in this article. I'll be honest and say that I had some issues with this condition in my freshman year. And indeed there is a lot to consider. Another patient presents with pain, swelling, and a bump in the fourth toe area. The pain is so severe that it is impossible to wear shoes. In summer you can wear open-toed shoes, but what if it's cold?
Well, then a painful bump appears between the toes. And not just somewhere, but between the fourth and fifth toe. What's up with the fourth toe?
Patients came to us after consulting other surgeons and dermatologists. Doctors could look for a papilloma (like a viral wart) or culture for fungi. And they also thought of a fungal infection, but why between the little toe and the fourth toe?
Certainly a purely orthopedic pathology:
Indications for use
The thumb and second finger splitter can help with such problems:
- valgus deformity of the big toe;
- inflamed bones in the foot;
- Crossed big toe and second toe;
- 1st and 2nd toe hammer toe/claw deformities;
- calluses and damp abrasions on toes ;
- calluses and diaper rash between toes;
- pain in the first toe of any origin;
- Forefoot discomfort when wearing shoes;
- pain in the joint of the big toe;
- impaired mobility of the joint of the big toe;
- abnormal changes in gait (clubfoot, waddling gait, etc.).
The silicone toe separator is a must for wearing tight shoes. It prevents the formation of a bunion and reduces the deviation of the big toe. If there is no bunion, the toe separator will help avoid it.
action (effect)
The fabric toe separator has several functions:
- prevention of valgus deformity of the big toe;
- protection of the toes from friction;
- preventing the development of a bunion;
- walking without pain and discomfort;
- Anatomical alignment of the first toe;
- Relief and normalization of the forefoot function;
- Improvement in gait and posture.
The use of the brace is guaranteed to protect the toes from deformation and friction, even when wearing very tight shoes.
indications
The Hammer Toe Crisis Kit is indicated for at least 1 or 2 symptoms:
- Abduction of the foot and abnormal adduction of the big toe;
- pain in toes and forefoot;
- Increased fatigue and pain after prolonged walking;
- Rubbing toes on footwear, dry and wet calluses;
- Difficulty choosing and wearing comfortable footwear;
- maceration or hypersensitivity in the spaces between the toes;
- thickening in the joints of the affected toes;
- unfixed claw deformation;
- curling of the fingers with the nail pointing down;
- Restriction or complete loss of finger mobility;
- Changes in gait, inability to roll off from heel to toe;
- sharp and intense pain when trying to stand on your toes;
- ingrown toenails in deformed toes;
- poor circulation, increased sensitivity to cold in the feet;
- foci of hyperkeratosis and soft tissue injuries;
- Osteoarthritis of the metatarsophalangeal joints.
The first symptom of hammer toe is passive straightening of the fingers. This means that the curled fingers can be returned to their normal position by hand. As the disease progresses, the deformed toe phalanges can no longer be straightened, even with exertion. By using ORTGUT HAMMERTOE at the first sign of a deformity, the pathology can be corrected as quickly as possible.
Contents of the kit.
1. Toe clamp
The clamp places the deformed fingers in an anatomical position and reduces the degree of flexion of the fingers. The second and third fingers are clamped as tightly as possible, but the fabric finger divider prevents them from crossing each other. The toe support protects sore toes from all sides and prevents them from rubbing against the walls of the shoe. The product relieves pain by fixing the joint in a physiological position.
- The tension is adjusted with a Velcro fastener;
- breathable textile material;
- effective elimination of pain and discomfort;
- suitable for wearing with any type of footwear or barefoot;
- works gently and painlessly.
Products suitable for day and night wear for the gradual correction of hammer toe.
2 toe insoles with 3 locking rings
The retaining rings straighten the deformed toes, physically separating them and relieving the metatarsal bones. The toes are pressed against the soft cushion, which helps correct hammer toe deformities. The base of the pad is made of shock-absorbing latex and gently springs back when walking to protect the forefoot from dynamic loads. The padded microfiber toe separator prevents calluses and corns when wearing heeled and hard-soled shoes.
Equipped with 3 rings and a foot relief footbed:
- Toe fixation and full forefoot relief;
- High quality, hypoallergenic and cushioning materials;
- Suitable for all closed shoes;
- prevents the foot from slipping in the shoe;
- light and unobtrusive on the foot.

How to choose an orthopedic toe separator?
There are many different orthopedic toe separators on the market. They have a medicinal purpose and affect toe alignment.
The choice of splint should be made by a qualified professional at an orthopedic store or by a doctor. They are made of medical gel or silicone, depending on the severity of the condition and the individual foot.
Toe protectors come in different sizes. Which size is most suitable depends on the height of the big toe. The products with cuffs have different diameters and are selected after measuring the foot circumference.
Video
In this video, an orthopedic surgeon has his thoughts on orthopedic toe protectors:
Orthopedic toe separators are very popular and allow people with various foot deformities to live normally. They reduce the likelihood of skin abrasions on the feet and toes and ensure an easier gait. Made of silicone or medical gel, the protectors are practically invisible in the shoe and can be worn all day long. In this article you will learn what the professional hair dyes are called.
immobilisation of the thumb
Helps reduce lesions, reduce joint inflammation and relieve pain uncomfortable when walking or wearing high-heeled shoes. Ultimately, it leads to the restoration of the normal, normal position of the toe.
Foot and toe correctors are available in large numbers.
A so-called bunion fixator made of silicone is used in an anatomically favorable position, which quickly adapts to the shape of the toe without causing any discomfort.
This encourages a gradual shrinkage of the growth provided it is worn continuously. The bone is less visible and barely noticeable.
In case of foot discomfort and fatigue after a day's work, a toe separator called 'Nega' can be used, which is very simple and easy to use. Simply placed between the toes, it eliminates corns, calluses, discomfort and heaviness on the feet. The product can also be used as a preventive measure against deforming changes in the feet. How to use toe spacers and toe protectors correctly?
Features of the application
The application is generally straightforward and does not require any special skills. It is enough to adjust the splitter so that it immobilizes the toes or a thumb. This depends on the type of splint and the area of the lesion. The product must be pressed firmly into place. The shoe can then be put on. Should they be taken off before bed? However, a sock should be worn over it at night to keep it in place. The splitter can be used 24/7.
What does it look like and how does it work?
The Fresher orthosis is constructed from medical grade stainless steel wire containing nickel and chromium. The diameter of the wire is 0.4 – 0.7 mm and is selected on a case-by-case basis, depending on the thickness of the nail plate, the nature and severity of the problem.
Using wire cutters and pliers, the podiatrist makes two small hooks on the end of the wire to attach it to the nail and a loop on the part that goes through the nail plate. The hooks create tension points and the loop is the power regulator. Their shape, height and attachment point are chosen individually.
Variants of the loop on the Fraser hanger can be seen in the photo:
The effect of the Fraser bracket on the nail depends on the thickness of the nail and the severity of the problem.
- prevents ingrowth;
- lifts, evens out the angles of the nail plate;
- reshapes the deformed nail;
- Reduces the pressure of the ingrown edge on the soft tissues.
installation
The correction system is only used by a professional who has received special training on the Fraser device. Unfortunately, many people choose to treat themselves by searching the internet for where to buy a wire or Fraser brace for an ingrown nail. But you can't buy them off the shelf.
- You must know the process and manufacturing technique;
- have a good understanding of the mechanics of the correction system;
- know where to put the loop, what size and shape to choose;
- how to wrap and fasten the side hooks.
You also need special tools.
- Examination by a podiatrist, assessment of the condition, treatment of inflammation and elimination of infection (if necessary).
- Treatment of the nail, cleaning of the nail shafts.
- Insertion of a correction system. Sometimes the podiatrist does not make the system right away, but takes an impression of the nail plate, makes the brace, tries it on, and attaches it to the nail. The need for an impression depends on the thickness and structure of the nail, as well as other factors.
- Fixation, attachment of the correction system.
The procedure is carried out under aseptic conditions. It is painless, slight discomfort is possible. Over time, the procedure lasts between 15 and 30 minutes.
The pain caused by ingrowth often subsides immediately after onset. In the first 24 hours, the patient feels a slight feeling of tension.
After inserting the correction system, no special care is required. You can continue your usual lifestyle and wear the same shoes as before. Due to the secure fit, no complaints arise. You can use this method of treatment at any time of the year.
species
Manufacturers today offer a wide range of orthopedic foot corrections. This includes:
- gel pillow;
- protectors attached to the ankles;
- separating bandages or splints;
- insoles, spacers;
- foot straps;
- caps, rings.
Gel pads make wearing high-heeled shoes comfortable and hassle-free. These orthopedic aids help to evenly distribute the physical stress on the feet. They can relieve muscle tension and have a massaging effect. They help normalize blood circulation and reduce the risk of varicose veins. After using gel inserts, walking becomes nice and secure.
At night, when the person is the least mobile, it is better to use abduction splints or bandages for prophylactic and therapeutic purposes. These products are often used when there is a misalignment of the big toe, ie the little toe deviates from the inside of the foot. With this type of orthopedic corrector, the development of deformities and complications can be significantly slowed down or limited.
The ankle protectors are made of medical-grade silicone, which allows the product to have the desired shape and size. These orthopedic products are considered to be universally applicable. Their use allows for the correct distribution of physical stress on the feet and prevents joint injuries, abrasions and blisters.
