In the examination room, the patient has to lie down on a sliding table. One or both feet are then secured with special straps. As soon as the table is pushed into the machine, the examination begins. Once the scan is complete, the results will be displayed.
What is creatinine?
Creatinine is a chemical compound that is produced during energy-generating processes in the muscles. Healthy kidneys filter creatinine from the blood. It is then excreted from the body in urine.
The kidneys maintain blood creatinine levels within normal limits. Elevated creatinine levels indicate dysfunction or disease in these organs.
When the kidneys are diseased, the level of creatinine in the blood increases because the kidneys do not excrete it adequately. Therefore, abnormally high creatinine levels warn of possible kidney dysfunction or kidney failure. For this reason, standard blood tests usually measure the amount of creatinine in the blood.
When is a creatinine test recommended?
A creatinine test is ordered for the following reasons:
- to diagnose if there are signs or symptoms of kidney disease;
- to screen for kidney disease if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease that increases your risk of kidney disease;
- To monitor the treatment or progression of kidney disease;
- to monitor side effects of medications that affect the kidneys or changes in kidney function;
- to monitor the function of a transplanted kidney.
Some people may be diagnosed with severe kidney disease by chance if they have an elevated creatinine level on a routine blood test without experiencing any symptoms.
Others may experience a range of symptoms of kidney failure, depending on the cause of the problem, including:
- feeling dehydrated;
- Fatigue;
- swelling;
- Shortness of breath;
- other non-specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, neuropathy and dry skin.
