Children's shoes: sizes in tables

Children's shoes: sizes in the table

Do you know that feeling of confusion when buying children's shoes? The length of the sole seems to be the same, but the sizes are different. How to buy new slippers or shoes without making a mistake?

To avoid the confusion of buying children's shoes, you need to know how to choose the right size. This is where the problem lies, because in the same store you can find shoes that have exactly the same sole length but are marked with different sizing.

The fact is that the countries where shoes are made have their own sizing system (similar to clothing, for example). A simple children's shoe size chart will help you buy shoes 'on foot'.

How to properly measure your child's feet

Before you buy shoes for your child, you should measure their feet. This measurement is very useful when you go shopping without the future wearer. Knowing your foot size in centimeters and taking the size chart with you, you can easily orient yourself when buying shoes from any manufacturer.

Measure your foot in the evening: This is the time of day when the measurement shows the highest value, since during the day the blood flows into the foot and it widens as a result. In this way you avoid that a slipper fits in the morning and becomes too tight in the evening.

How do you find the right size? Put a sock over your foot if you don't want to wear the shoe barefoot. Place a sheet of paper underneath and measure while standing, as the foot can be smaller when seated. Trace the foot with a pencil. Using a ruler, measure the distance between the highest point on the heel side and the highest point of the outermost toe (big toe or second toe depending on foot structure). Round the result down to the nearest 5 mm.

You can cut out the 'foot' and take it to the store. You can place the template on the sole or even better on the insole to make sure the size fits. A safety margin is allowed, but must not be more than one centimeter.

How do you find out what shoe size your child needs?

To determine the correct shoe size for children, measure your child's foot, ie the distance from the heel to the tip of the big toe.

Remember that a human's heel, even a child's, is inclined and has a bone that protrudes slightly beyond the foot, so you should take this into account when measuring foot length.

Measure as shown in the picture.

Remember to measure with socks on, as unlike adults, children rarely wear bare feet, even in the summer. Also, try to measure in the evening when your child's feet are still slightly swollen. This gives you a more accurate and up-to-date measurement.

Make sure you know the length of both feet, and if these parameters differ slightly, you should focus on the slightly larger foot when determining the size. By the way, different feet are completely normal, and this phenomenon occurs not only in children, but also in adults.

Each shoe size is based on the length of a person's foot. In Russia, this is measured in centimeters. Foreign manufacturers usually indicate the size in inches or stichi. As you know, an inch is 2.54 cm and a stitch is 2/3 cm.

Therefore, as a rule, Russian children's shoe sizes are indicated differently from American, English and European sizes. But if you know the exact length of your child's feet, you can easily find out the size by comparing the data with the shoe size chart.

Since different manufacturers and retailers specify the sizes in different standards, we have compiled the most common sizes for you in a table. If your measurements don't match any of these numbers, round up your foot length.

Remember that for children under the age of 10, the distance between the big toe and the tip of the shoe should be between 1 and 1.5 centimeters. For older children, 0.5 centimeters is sufficient.

The subtleties when choosing high-quality and comfortable children's shoes

High quality and comfortable children's shoes

As mentioned earlier, a child's growing feet need to wear the right footwear to avoid health problems. When shopping, not only the table is important, but also the following points:

  1. The selected pair should not be too heavy. Heavy and 'wooden' shoes are a sign of poor quality and will likely be very uncomfortable to wear;
  2. the insole (the bulge under the midsole), which protects against the development of flat feet;
  3. Pay attention to the sock - we recommend choosing round and not pointed socks as they do not pinch the toes on the sides;
  4. the sole is very important, especially for seasonal shoes. It should be easy to bend and not slip, it is also worth choosing a slightly protruding toe - this protects against stones, curbs, etc.;
  5. The material is equally important: summer shoes and sandals made of leather keep feet warm, while winter boots or boots made of a rubber membrane or a special fabric with a fleece inside do not get wet and always stay warm;
  6. Velcro and Velcro fasteners. Decide for yourself whether your child can cope with the constant lacing or whether you prefer to cover yourself with a Velcro fastener;
  7. the look. The seams, the glued joints, the cleanliness of the sole and so on. We are sure that you can tell the difference between a good product and a bad one yourself, the important thing is to pay attention.

The American children's shoe sizes can be divided into 3 groups:

  • for children from birth to 1 year – 0.5 to 5;
  • for children from 1.5 to 6 years – from 6 to 13.5
  • for teenagers over 7 years old - from 1 to 7 on the scale for adult shoes.

It's important to remember that children's feet grow very quickly, and it's best to buy shoes with extra room: leaving 1.5 centimeters between the big toe and the tip of the shoe is ideal. To ensure that the shoes you buy always fit, children up to the age of 2 should be measured every 2 months, from 3 to 6 years every 3 months and from the age of 7 every 6 months.
