Orthopedic shoes for adults: prevention and treatment.

Today it is fashionable to take care of yourself and your health. We try to eat well, get enough sleep, exercise... However, we very often neglect such an important topic as the condition of our feet. In the pursuit of beauty, we often forget not only the benefits, but also the basic comfort. All of this is a 'spark' for the development of foot deformities and, if we do not take care of them quickly, even more serious problems with the joints and even the spine.

With the right orthopedic shoes, which are available in specialized stores today, all of these unpleasant consequences can be avoided. Contrary to popular belief, orthopedic shoes are essential for anyone who values comfort and cares about their health. If the problems have already begun, it is not enough to wear orthopedic shoes. The final shape of the foot is achieved by the age of seven, and only until then can its development be influenced by the correct fitting of orthopedic shoes. In adulthood, it is only possible to inhibit the development of the disease, but this is not insignificant either.

So why are orthopedic shoes needed for adults?

First of all, to prevent possible illnesses and foot problems. However, if a deformity has already occurred, orthopedic shoes will help make the feet as comfortable as possible. Orthopedic shoes for problematic, deformed feet are more voluminous, softer, often seamless and have special insoles. Such shoes are light, comfortable and do not pinch or pinch anywhere - exactly what problem feet need. Orthopedic shoes have the right profile so that the foot's contact with the ground does not extend to the big toe and the load is properly distributed throughout the foot. They can even be worn by people with the so-called diabetic foot (when the shoe pinches and the foot ulcers do not go away, as in diabetics due to the sensitive blood vessels).

Of course, these are the most serious and least noticed cases, but who of us hasn't had foot problems? We often feel fatigue, heaviness in the feet and other unpleasant sensations. These are often caused by the wrong footwear. For example, it is very unhealthy to wear heels that are more than 5 cm high, as this puts a lot of strain on the spine. Heels at an 'unhealthy' height should not be worn more than two days per week. On the other hand, you shouldn't avoid heels at all. In both extreme cases, special correctors or insoles are necessary.

Orthopedic shoes take into account all these recommendations: the heel height is within the norm, so you will always feel comfortable in them. In addition, the shoe has longitudinal and transverse correction, which is important in the initial stages of flat feet. Inside there is a special gel insole that adapts to the foot. These shoes are very comfortable to wear at work - especially for people who spend a lot of time on their feet - then your feet are guaranteed comfort.

Replace flat shoes and wear prophylactics

Prophylaxis is the name for a treatment in which 1-2 millimeter thick polyurethane or rubber pads are glued to the sole area. The prophylaxis can be used on both used and new shoes. In the first case, prevention will help protect the sole from further abrasion and restore its appearance. In the second case, it protects against abrasion and moisture, which is particularly important for shoes with leather soles.

Installation and installation of preventative care in Rendez-Vous

In our presence, the foreman applied the prophylactic to two pairs of shoes and replaced the heels at the same time. For the Gianmarco Lorenzi shoes he used a standard prophylactic, for the red MGL pumps he chose a semicircular one. The shoemaker determines the most appropriate form of prophylaxis based on the shape of the shoe and the design of the sole, and often aesthetics is the only criterion.

  • Installation and adjustment of preventive measures in Rendez-Vous

The mechanics of the treatment are the same in both cases. The craftsman marks the limit to which the old prophylactic should be ground off with a sharp tool and removes it with a grinder. Once the preparation is complete, the craftsman cuts out the approximate shape of the prophylactic from standard blanks and applies glue to it and separately to the sanded sole.

The craftsman stretches the prophylactic by 'planting' it into the shape of the sole and then glues it with the flat side of a hammer, pressing it evenly over the entire surface so that there are no gaps or unglued areas. For additional reinforcement, the shoe is placed on a pillow and glued with a special soft press.

  • Replacing front shoes and adjusting preventive care at Rendez-Vous

Stretch to the length, width and fullness of the cuff

Maybe you bought a new pair, put them on for the first time and feel uncomfortable. The shoe may be too narrow in length, width or instep. Take them to Rendez-Vous where a professional can stretch them without damaging the appearance or compromising the integrity of the seams. A pair of Geox sneakers that needed to be stretched in length and width were brought to the workshop in Maroszówka. The craftsman treated the surface of the shoes with a special solution (the composition of which is kept secret) and placed them on metal molds. These are not the pads we are used to drying shoes on; they gradually heat and stretch the leather, and the degree of stretch is adjusted by hand by the craftsman, changing the size of the pad.

Stretching shoes at Rendez-Vous

It's not just new shoes that can be stretched. Imagine you wore your boots all last fall and over the winter you gained some weight so the zipper on the shaft no longer fits. Do you want to throw the pair away? No way! A craftsman can stretch the cuff of the shoe without damaging the zipper or deforming the shape of the shoe. The process is the same: the shoes are sprayed, formed into metal molds and stretched to the correct size.

If stretching is required:

→ the new pair of shoes is too narrow in length or width;
→ The boot cuffs no longer let go and no longer press on the calves.

Result:

The shoe sits on the foot without an excitingly long overlap time. Leather and zippers are not damaged, the material is not deformed and the shoe does not lose its shape. There is no risk of damaging the material or shape, as is the case with stretching at home.

Types and features of prophylaxis

The first classification of prophylaxis is based on the material from which it is made:

The padding is usually no thicker than 1mm, so the extra padding is in no way noticeable when walking. In contrast, the prophylactic in men's shoes can be heavier and also have additional anti-slip protection. Women's shoes cannot be heavier, so the prophylactic for them will be as thin and light as possible.

Another important consideration is the color of the additional insole. In the workshop you can choose any color, so that the shoe prophylaxis is not noticeable.

Most often, the prophylactic is placed on the foot (working part of the sole), while the heel padding takes on the role of additional protection.

Shoe prophylaxis – yes or no

Some of the best arguments for shoe prophylaxis:

  • protection from rain and snow;
  • protection from salt and chemicals being spread on the roads;
  • Extending the life of the shoe without mechanical damage;
  • increased stability of footwear;
  • low cost (especially compared to repairs).

It should be noted that not every shoe requires prophylaxis. If these are inexpensive shoes, you can do without additional padding. However, if you have purchased shoes with a leather sole and want to protect them as much as possible, you should not miss out on preventive maintenance.

When to have a preventative adjustment done

If you plan to wear leather-soled shoes in the rain regularly, consider replacing them with a preventative adjustment. Remember that occasional walking on wet pavement will not harm leather soles; Things are different when you walk through puddles, even if this is necessary. Sometimes huge puddles form after a sudden rain shower, so it's worth taking precautions.

If you only want to wear your shoes in dry weather or in closed rooms (e.g. in the office), prophylaxis does not make sense. However, it may be useful to use metal reinforcements on the pads of the sole, as these areas tend to wear out quickly.

Insoles for socks

Metal lining on the toes

In addition, it should be added that prophylaxis is not required for rubber or leather soles with a factory rubber insert.

Does the heel need to be treated prophylactically?

No, the prophylaxis only needs to be applied to the part of the sole that comes into regular contact with the ground. Of course, the heel also comes into regular contact with the floor, but prophylaxis is not necessary. It is only necessary to monitor the wear dynamics of the heel counter and request a workshop to replace it even before it is completely worn out in one area of the heel (otherwise, when another layer of the heel counter is worn out, the entire heel must be replaced, which costs more than replacing the heel cap).

Leather shoes: care

Careful, daily care is the key to the longevity of any shoe. Even the most expensive pair of shoes is no exception.

How often should the soles of shoes be cared for?

It's best to contact a professional and have your shoes repaired immediately after purchase. In this way you prevent wear and tear on the sole and avoid high repair costs in the future. In addition, you immediately ensure that the product is durable and long-lasting. By avoiding expensive shoes, you can be sure that your shoes will serve you for several seasons. High-quality leather shoes should therefore first and foremost be taken to a repair shop.

The paragraphs are not preventative because they are protected by paragraphs. In addition, this type of repair is not necessary for shoes purchased for warm and dry seasons.

Why do preventive maintenance on shoe soles?

Don't wait until the soles are completely worn out - they should be cared for as soon as possible after purchase. This especially applies to leather shoes. Our Moscow atelier carries out preventive care of hems and soles by carefully and reliably applying a thin protective layer to their outside. One of the advantages of this method is that it increases the adhesion coefficient. This reduces the risk of slipping, especially in wet, cold and snowy weather. In addition, wear is reduced to zero. This is especially true for expensive shoes that cannot be thrown away just because the wearer stepped on a sharp object.
