Full-leg orthoses: easily and securely fixed

The use of the full-leg orthosis, its advantages, design features, production, indications and contraindications for many diseases, its models - we will consider all this in our overview.

The full-leg orthosis - a tourniquet - is intended for rehabilitation and fixation of the lower limbs in a certain position. It is a rigid splint, an excellent replacement for a plaster cast and has significant advantages over an orthosis.

It is used in children and adults, for paralysis and myositis, to correct deformities of the lower limbs and after surgery and trauma. It features a wide range of sizes from 10 to 22, affordable prices and a selection of designs made from hypoallergenic materials.

What is an orthosis?

The orthosis is a plaster structure designed to hold the lower extremity in a fixed (functionally favorable) position in certain diseases and a number of pathological conditions. As a rule, the entire limb is fixed or movement is restricted in only one direction (e.g. knee or hip - flexion and extension only).

It is fundamentally different from orthoses and bandages in that it firmly immobilizes the leg and is a monolithic cuff or device consisting of three to five independent frame rings. No elastic materials are used in their manufacture.

A bandage consists of several parts that tightly fix the lateral limb, but contains soft polymer parts, including neoprene. Bandages are intended for immobilizing loose limbs and are used as a preventive measure against complications of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system.

The main function of an orthopedic orthosis is to support and securely hold the affected organ (in our case, the lower extremity) in a certain position.

The most commonly used orthosis is a split, unbreakable orthosis, of which there are various models.

Turbocast for children

Turbocast is a low temperature thermoplastic material. This material has shape memory and is the latest development in the manufacture of various types of fixators. Turbocast splints help correct the position of the joints and develop correct movement patterns.

Making such an orthosis takes about 30 minutes. The doctor places the foot in the desired position. He heats the material to over 60°C, cools it to 40°C, places it on the ankle and shapes it into the desired shape. When forming the orthosis, the material is very malleable, but it takes about 5-7 minutes to cool down.

Orthoses for cerebral palsy

Pediatric orthoses used for cerebral palsy ensure normal development of the child's joints and help reduce muscle tension in skeletal muscles. The following types of joint orthoses are used for this problem:

Full shoulder models are also used.

When choosing an orthosis, attention should be paid to the material from which it is made. It should be lightweight, durable and comfortable to wear. Plaster models are inexpensive and very durable, but in other respects they are far inferior to thermoplastic orthoses.

Modern orthoses are made from a plaster cast or directly on the injured limb and are precisely adapted to its contours. They are easy to model on the patient and can be adjusted during treatment. A major advantage of plastic splints is their resistance to X-rays, which allows the patient's rehabilitation process to be monitored.

What is an orthosis in medicine. Types of orthoses

What is an orthosis in medicine. Types of orthoses

Orthoses are made depending on the purpose and location on the person's body.

The tunnels are divided into the following types according to their location.

  • Orthoses to secure the knee joint.
  • Orthoses for the ankle joint.
  • Foot orthoses to relieve pressure on the lower limbs and adapt to the entire leg.
  • Walking and sleeping orthoses for functional use.
  • Orthopedic orthoses to protect the joints of the upper limbs.

The following groups of orthopedic orthoses can be distinguished according to their function.

  • Prophylactic. They are used to prevent injuries and joint damage, as well as to aggravate chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
  • Therapeutic. They are used in the complex treatment of injuries and diseases, to eliminate complications from the musculoskeletal system. In addition, such splints are often used in the rehabilitation period after surgical interventions.
  • Improving the quality of life. These types of splints are used for the long-term treatment of disabilities caused by congenital and acquired musculoskeletal defects.

All orthopedic splints have their own size table, but thanks to their universal design and additional devices, they can be easily adjusted to any body and individual body characteristics. An orthopedic splint is often made on the patient or using a plaster cast. This most accurately reflects the body structure and is therefore the most effective.

How long should an orthosis be worn? Principles of selection

When choosing an orthosis, it is important to consider the size, structure and material of the orthosis.

You should choose orthoses made from hypoallergenic materials and make sure that they are permeable to air.

You should also assess the security of the closure so that you don't have to constantly adjust an orthosis that keeps slipping off.

Note that each manufacturer has its own size scale. Some companies recommend measuring the circumference of the knee to find the right size, others the circumference of the hip in the middle and then comparing these numbers with the information on the packaging.

Do not purchase an orthosis without first consulting a professional and try it on to see if it is comfortable before making the final purchase. The knee should be immobilized from the upper third of the thigh to the lower third of the shin.

Special care must be taken when choosing an orthosis for a child. It is better to have them custom-made, taking into account the patient's personal characteristics.

The orthosis for a child must meet the following requirements

  • It must be light;
  • It must be wear-resistant;
  • hypoallergenic and harmless to health;
  • She must fix the knee well;
  • be easily adjustable.

Custom-made orthoses allow the child not only to walk during the day, but also to sleep in them. As a rule, such orthoses are worn for a long time, so they are made for children from flexible, durable and breathable materials. The orthosis is removable so that it can be used e.g. B. can be removed for bathing and therapeutic procedures.

Adjustable rigid knee brace

The rigid knee orthosis enables maximum immobilization of the joint. It is similar to a cast, but is easier to use and does not cause muscle loss. The knee orthosis completely immobilizes the joint and can be used for torn ligaments, meniscus injuries, knee fractures, in rehabilitation and after operations.

The knee brace is designed for long-term wear. It is also the same as a plaster cast, but allows the joint to move so that the muscles remain tense. An articulated knee splint is indicated for severe injuries, severe pain and in the postoperative period. The removable design of the orthosis allows for better results in the treatment of joint mobility limitations, swelling and obesity.

Various orthoses for the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders, including the semi-rigid split knee brace, the price of which depends on the quality of the materials, can be purchased in specialized pharmacies or online.

Knee braces: price

To purchase the product, contact a retailer that sells high-quality knee braces. The price of the product fluctuates between 1,500 and 4,000 rubles. This difference is due to the different types of orthoses, their composition, additional features and functions. A soft brace is cheaper and an articulated knee brace is more expensive. The price of an articulated knee brace starts from 5,000 RUB. If you want to buy an inexpensive knee brace, you need to be very careful when choosing the product. A poor quality brace made from non-breathable fabrics that does not support the anatomical position of the knee can deteriorate the joint and cost more in the future.

Doctors at Yusupov Hospital can help you find an orthosis that combines the best price and quality features. A good brace is the key to a full recovery of your knee joint.

You can make an appointment with a trauma surgeon or other specialists and find out more about the work of the rehabilitation center or other issues of interest by calling Yusupov Hospital.
