PRP therapy in orthopedics

Medical science is developing rapidly and is always making new discoveries. One of these innovations is plasma therapy for joint treatment (PRP). This method has proven to be an effective and safe treatment option for pathologies related to abnormal metabolic processes and the synthesis of cartilage tissue.

The name PRP is an acronym for Platelet Rich Plasma. It is a platelet-rich substance. But where is it obtained from and how is it used? We will talk about that later in this article.

Some historical facts

The method is actually not new. Active research was conducted in the 20th century. The first sources on the use of platelet-rich plasma in musculoskeletal pathology appeared in the 1970s.

More recent articles by American researchers were published between 1997 and 1998, discussing the use of an enriched compound in jaw surgery. The new technology quickly found its way to Europe. In the 21st century it is used in almost all areas of medicine and also in cosmetology.

What is PRP therapy based on?

PRP joint therapy is based on the functional properties of platelets extracted from human blood. These elements are called clotting factors. They encourage blood clots to form when a blood vessel is damaged. They ensure that wounds stop bleeding.

But the most important feature is that these blood elements help in the regeneration of connective tissue cells. This fact has led to their use in the treatment of joint diseases. They stimulate cells – fibroblasts – to actively synthesize collagen and elastogen. These substances are part of the osteochondral system, skin and ligaments.

Enriched blood plasma contains up to 1000-2500×1009/l. platelets. Their number, as a rule, does not exceed 180-320×109/l. Venous blood is used for manipulation. Stratification and enrichment takes place in a centrifuge.

How plasma therapy is used in orthopedics

By supplying the patient's own plasma concentrate, the symptoms are alleviated and the mobility of the joints is restored. Lost functions are restored 2-3 times faster than with conventional drug therapy.

The use of prp therapy in orthopedics is based on its ability to induce regeneration of cartilage and ligaments. This is a proven fact. The duration of treatment is therefore longer than with conventional remission therapies.

Particularly good results are obtained in the treatment of degenerative diseases of the joints and spine, such as. B. arthritis, arthrosis, osteochondrosis, intervertebral fractures, etc. The injections are given every 1-2 weeks for several months. If there are no contraindications, plasma therapy for joints is used without restrictions.

PRP for knee joint problems

The knees are most often affected - cold, trauma, overload from long walks. Indications for the prescription are:

  1. Osteoarthritis, arthrosis of the knee, occurs due to a decrease in metabolic processes. The cartilage tissue is destroyed by the undersupply of nutrients. There is pain, stiffness, and swelling in the knee.
  2. Inflammation of the bursa (bursitis) – damage to the joint capsule is manifested by pain with swelling of the knee.
  3. Injuries and fractures result in soft tissue damage, hematoma, lacerations, and compromised bone and ligament integrity. This is accompanied by redness, swelling and acute pain.
  4. After a surgical procedure, including these injections in the treatment regimen can speed up the healing process.
  5. Atrophy (shrinkage, deformation) of articular cartilage in connection with various changes - inflammatory, degenerative, autoimmune - causes grinding, rubbing and pain in the knee.

Treatment of joints with plasma therapy relieves pain, restores mobility and reduces the use of painkillers. However, a lasting effect is achieved only after 4-6 months of continuous treatment.

Procedure for Obtaining a Quota

Before applying for a surgical quota, the applicant must visit a district doctor (orthopaedist, traumatologist, rheumatologist) and undergo a comprehensive medical examination to confirm that he has a condition that allows free treatment. If the decision of the medical association is positive, the applicant will receive a quota report as well as the results of the laboratory and equipment tests.

The originals and copies of the following documents must then be sent to the Ministry of Health:

  • passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation;
  • Insurance policy of statutory health insurance;
  • health insurance policy;
  • Outcome of Commission decision on quotas;
  • Certificate of Health Disability (if any);
  • Excerpt from the medical record with information about the precise diagnosis, therapies carried out and all examinations;
  • A written application in the prescribed form.

A committee chaired by a specialist in traumatology and orthopedics examines the documents received. The patient is not present at this session, but can be invited to a personal interview in the event of a dispute. The examination of the application takes 10 working days. After this period, the details of the person concerned will be forwarded to the hospital where the prosthetic work is to be carried out. The patient is included in the overall plan of the operation.

Quota Queue

After submitting the application documents, an invitation to endoprosthetics must be awaited. The interview will be conducted by a representative of the federal medical facility at the contact phone number provided on the application form.

Many patients want to find out for themselves how to view the waiting list. There are two ways to find out how the paperwork is going:

  • On the website of the Ministry of Health, through a written request on the prescribed form or by entering an individual ticket number;
  • directly when you are placed on the waiting list.

The waiting time varies between 2-3 months and 5-6 years and depends on the following factors:

  • Region;
  • utilization and technical equipment of the clinic;
  • number and qualification of doctors;
  • The type of prosthesis needed;
  • the type and complexity of the intervention.

Keep in mind that the waiting list for hip replacement surgery is usually longer than for other types of prostheses.

Important!!!

During the waiting period, you should carefully monitor your state of health. Sudden weight gain, the occurrence of certain diseases and taking medication can prevent the operation from being performed.

New ways of treating the spine in children. Professor Sergey Vissarionov talks about the unique program

Hip arthroplasty clinics in Russia

Today, not only Western, but also Russian clinics for patients with knee joint problems are noteworthy - these include private clinics in Moscow and orthopedic centers in Russia. Many of the country's medical centers carry out the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of injuries and diseases of the muscles, vessels and bones of the musculoskeletal system. Knee replacement is performed using gentle methods. Tens of thousands of people from all over the world undergo postoperative treatment and rehabilitation in our country.

High professionalism, the in-depth knowledge of doctors, technologically advanced equipment, unique treatment methods, a variety of rehabilitation therapies, excellent premises and the caring and caring attitude of the staff towards patients determine the success of the surgical centers.

In 2016, the medical portal Zdorov.Online conducted for the first time a unique survey to identify the most reputable commercial medical institutions. The private clinics in Moscow have their own advantages, identified from different points of view. The result of the event is a ranking of the clinics, with the top performers being:

  • 'cheapest' – 'MedCentreService' (1st place), 'SM Clinic' (2nd place), 'Medcentre in Solntsevo' (3rd place). In their reviews, customers note the affordability of medical services at these facilities;
  • 'most prestigious' – 'European Medical Center', JSC 'Medcentre', Yusupov Hospitals. According to patients, they are all equipped with modern equipment, provide quality services, have chic interiors and are run exclusively by professionals.

The very name of the center suggests that the level of treatment here is European, as are the prices for the treatment. So why should you get treatment here when you can get it in Europe for the same money?

CITO - Knee Replacement, Customer Reviews

According to patient reviews, knee and hip replacement surgeries are successfully performed at CITO – NN Priorov Central Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics. This institution has the largest research base in Russia. Up to 6,000 patients are treated annually in the institute's center and clinic. Patients are accommodated in comfortable double rooms and suites. There is a swimming pool and sports halls for rehabilitation. Patients complete their treatment at specialized centers overseas.

One of the world famous centers is the Pirogov Surgical Center in Moscow. High-quality knee replacement surgeries are performed here and the most complex congenital and acquired knee defects are repaired.

How to get a longer 'native' joint?

The principles are the same: prevention, taking care of your own health, a balanced diet, fresh air and walks. Give up bad habits like smoking, drinking alcohol and greasy food. Eat more vegetables, fruits and nuts.

Everyone wants to eat poorly, smoke, and be overweight, but still be healthy. Putting ointment on a joint and hoping it goes away is a dead end.

Eat foods containing vitamins B, C and E and micronutrients such as magnesium, selenium and calcium every day.

Take a trip to nature, go for a walk in the park or near your home. Unfortunately, city dwellers have a harder time following these simple rules than country dwellers. Our big city air hasn't been that fresh for a long time, our groceries from the supermarket contain fewer natural ingredients and vitamins. The body is under constant stress.

Orthopedic Traumatologist

A competent doctor explained the matter to me without much talk! My knee is healthy and he saved a miniscope from surgery!

I had a visit with my child, I received the doctor's recommendations, I did some tests, I'm waiting for the results, the doctor promises to contact me by phone after the tests, I enjoyed everything

Many thanks to Mr. Shtanko for his work! Great doctor!!! Kind, considerate and knowledgeable, a professional in his field. I highly recommend this doctor! I am an 'experienced patient', I have back problems, lower back, chest and neck pain. Also arthrosis of the large and small joints (deformed fingers and toes). I had spinal rehabilitation with Vladislav Anatolievich and I am very happy with the results, the pain has gone, mobility and ease of movements are back, and I do physical exercises at home. I know that success depends on the efforts of doctor and patient. Now I continue the treatment of the joints in my legs and hands with Vladislav. And there is also a positive result. I'm glad I met this doctor and I will continue my treatment with him. I advise you to go to him.

He has operated on my knee joint so many times that I have forgotten which is right and which is left. But that was only 5 years ago. miracles and only. I bow to him.

The doctor was a very competent and friendly person. He immediately explained everything to me in detail. He suggested surgery. Thanks ?.

Very good specialist. Recognizes the problem just by looking at the patient. Competently. Very happy visiting her. The treatment continues, hopefully everything helps. and my daughter stays in sports. Thank you.

I did the insoles not really believing they would make a difference. But the back pain subsided, I could walk a lot more without tiring and I sat up straighter! I took my daughter and a friend with me to make the insoles. Because I believe that you can't build a house on a crooked foundation! If you don't have the right foundation, there can be a lot of misunderstandings and cramps. Before the orthotics I had terrible lower back pain, even the chiropractor couldn't help. But the orthoses helped, and how! I'm incredibly glad I let them do it. I'm going to the adjustments now. The doctor is wonderful. I really enjoyed the treatment. I will continue to go and recommend the orthoses to everyone!

Complex surgeries are now performed without incisions, including soft tissue and ligament grafts. This is possible in the Medgard Clinic thanks to new equipment and qualified specialists.

A minimally invasive technique is used at the Medgard Clinic, with minimal damage to the surrounding tissue. This allows for faster recovery of the patient.

With arthroscopy, operations on ligaments, meniscus, shoulder and knee joints can be performed without surgical incisions.

Signs of injury:

If not diagnosed in time, swelling and pain may subside, but functional impairment remains that is more difficult to treat later.

foot surgery

Nameless-1.jpg

The foot is our support. And such a well-known and common, but misunderstood by many, affliction as flat feet sometimes deprives us of that reliable support.

Uncomfortable shoes, synthetic overlays, lack of physical activity - all this leads to an abnormal development of the foot, to a deformity that flattens the arch of the foot. The result is blisters, various joint and back pains. Many suffer from what doctors call hallux valgus, also known as foot valgus.

This is all the result of a transverse flatfoot, which weakens the ligaments, widens the foot and deforms the first toe. This is the outward symptom of the disease, but patients also experience pain around this bump, pain on the plantar surface of the forefoot. Later, the deformation of the other toes also occurs, which also puts a strain on the patient.

Most pathologies can be treated conservatively. However, there are some that cannot be cured without surgery.

If the patient decides to have the foot surgically treated, an examination will be arranged. Once the results of the examination are available and there are no contraindications, Medgard's orthopedic and trauma surgeons select a surgical technique that is suitable for the patient and arrange an operation appointment.

At the Medgard Clinic, the orthopedic and trauma surgeons perform minimally invasive, low-traumatic surgeries for the patient that do not require hospital treatment.

The clinic has comfortable double and single rooms to ensure a comfortable postoperative stay. Therefore, patients who have undergone major and traumatic surgeries can remain in the hospital and be cared for by the attending physician.
