Clubfoot is a congenital musculoskeletal anomaly characterized by a bilateral malalignment of the lower limbs in which the feet are on the outer edge.
The characteristic symptoms of this congenital orthopedic anomaly are:
- Varus deformity of the foot in the newborn, when the sole part is bent downward and inward;
- Supination of the foot, when the sole of the foot is turned inward and the supporting part becomes the tarsal or metatarsal bone;
- Adduction, when the arch of the foot is enlarged and directed inward in the forefoot area.
The degree of these symptoms varies both upwards and downwards. Sometimes the supination of the child's lower limbs is so pronounced that the inner heel touches the ankle joint, and a pronounced varus deformity pulls the heel up and turns it inward.
According to medical theory, congenital bilateral clubfoot is defined both as a mild form (osteal sac varus contracture), in which the talar head protrudes with little skin mobility, and as a soft tissue and ligamentous form, in which the skin layer is well developed and there is no bony protrusion is available.

The comprehensive LFC approach involves the gradual application of corrective casts. A so-called position therapy is carried out, which is reinforced by special massages. After removing the cast, the massage therapist performs exercises on the foot and lower leg, followed by repositioning with a corrective bandage.
The massage is intended to ensure complete relaxation of the muscles of the foot and lower limbs. For this purpose, stroking, vibration, kneading, muscle diastasis and stretching of the heel tendons are carried out.
After the relaxation massage, muscle tension is released, and the masseur performs the next phase of therapeutic rehabilitation - physical exercises:
- The starting position for the child is lying on his back.. The goal is to eliminate external adduction of the foot. Let's say the masseur is working on the right foot. Pressure is applied to the ankle with the left hand, with the first finger on the outer ankle and the second finger on the inner ankle, so that the child's heel rests on the massage therapist's hand. With the right hand on the foot, with the first finger on the outside edge, the massager's curved second finger on the back of the limb, and the third finger on the inside, press the child's foot outward. The same applies to the left foot.
- The starting position is as before. The aim is to eliminate rotation of the foot in relation to the longitudinal axis. The masseur grasps the child's right foot with his right hand and places the first toe on the sole of the foot and the others on the back of the foot. The heel is held with the other hand. The massage is carried out by applying pressure on the first toe from bottom to top on the outer edge of the child's limb, while the massage acts from top to bottom on the inner edge.
- The starting position does not change. The goal is to eliminate plantar flexion. The masseur's right hand presses the child's left shin against the table, with the first and second fingers resting on the ankle joint. The masseur's left hand presses the sole of the foot upwards with the palm of his hand.
How are the legs corrected for varus curvature?
In children, varus curvature of the legs can often be corrected with conservative measures.
The first step is to treat the underlying condition that caused the deformity. For example, vitamin D is prescribed for rickets. In addition, special orthoses and other orthopedic aids, massages and therapeutic exercises are used.
In adulthood, the deformity can only be corrected through surgery. A corrective osteotomy is then performed. In 2010, researchers at Volgograd State Medical University published a paper in which they concluded that axial osteotomy of the tibia using an Ilizarov apparatus is effective for dysplastic labral curvatures of the legs.

The parents of a boy came to the Happy Baby Center when the child was 1 year and 2 months old. The baby's legs were O-shaped and the sight was frightening. We had a course of 10 massage treatments. - Visit your pediatrician regularly for checkups (once or twice a year);
- Give your child vitamin D in fall and winter.
