9 signs a bad mood might be depression
If we list the possible symptoms of depression, there are more than a hundred, because almost any physical ailment or mental change can be a manifestation of depression.
We have divided the most common symptoms into nine groups. They agree in part with the Hamilton Depression Scale, a model questionnaire that can be used by psychiatrists, psychotherapists, and general practitioners to diagnose depression. This scale contains a minimum of standard questions so that the doctor does not have to remember anything and can collect as much information as possible.
Remember that the best way to rule out depression is to speak to a psychiatrist or psychotherapist.
Here is a list of signs that indicate depression.
1 The depressed mood lasts for more than two weeks
Anyone can get into a bad, depressed mood — performing poorly, feeling very angry about work or personal life. In everyday life, a bad mood that lasts for a few hours or days is simply referred to as 'depression'. It's not a mistake, we're just used to it.
If the bad mood lasts two weeks or more, it may be a case of depression as an illness. The condition does not go away on its own and requires professional help. This criterion is found in the document by which all doctors in the world work - ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision). The ICD-10 summarizes the results of international medical research and recommends a list of criteria by which a diagnosis can be made for each disorder. The two-week period is one of the main symptoms of clinical depression.
Can depression also develop faster? Of course, the doctor will not wait two weeks to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment if the person has other clear symptoms (suicidal thoughts, refusal to eat, obsessive thoughts about their own loneliness). With severe symptoms, the doctor is obliged to urgently save the person, and the diagnosis does not matter much.
When you are depressed, you tend to feel depressed rather than sad. The person slows down, has less energy, and cannot find the strength to work or play. They may feel sad and cry more often, but depression and emptiness are more common.
How does this work?
Treatment of the spine and joints, internal organs and body systems does not always require direct therapy or surgery. Supportive methods such as acupuncture foot massage often play an important role. The numerous nerve endings in the hands and feet are sensors for the entire body. They absorb information from the environment and pass it on to the body via the central nervous system. With an effective intervention in the foot, it is possible to send positive signals and restore the functionality of a single area, a system or the whole organism.
The spine at the level of the nervous system is connected to the rib of the foot from the big toe to the heel. There are zones of equal size for each region of the spine – cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbar spine and sacrum. By touching certain points on the foot, the pain sensations show the exact location of the problem, which must be taken into account for further treatment.
What is needed for the massage?
No separate diagnosis is required for treatment. You just need to know what foot massage is and how to do it yourself. To do this, you must do the following
- Wash your hands and feet with warm water and dry them with a towel;
- sit on the floor and cross your legs in the lotus position;
- Relax in a comfortable position and, if necessary, place a pillow under your back and buttocks;
- Apply slightly heated massage oil to your feet and knead them from heel to toe and back;
- Apply slightly heated massage oil to feet and knead from heel to toe and back.
To get the most out of the foot massage, you should apply pressure with your thumb and move it in circular or vibrating motions on the areas of tension or pain. After a couple of minutes, you should stroke the entire area and knead the joints.
Many people prefer to massage their feet with their elbows rather than their thumbs. This simplifies the treatment without losing its full effectiveness.
Ideally, each foot should be massaged for at least 5 minutes daily or every other day. Already after the first session, an effect in the form of an improvement in general well-being and the relief of tension in the back and spine is visible.
