In 2014, Cheh, who had meanwhile accepted a job at ≪Selenokhod≫ Ltd in Skolkovo, quit his job and devoted his full attention to developing a bionic arm and looking for investments. ≪It's the usual venture capital story, Cheh explains. – We participated in startup competitions. We spoke to investors, defended our project and proved that there is a market to make money.

How young students made money with a forearm prosthesis that had not yet been manufactured
In Russia, more than 60,000 arm prostheses are needed annually, but seven times less are manufactured. Expensive imports don't solve the problem: Today, only every fifth Russian armless person has a prosthesis. Ilya Chekh, founder of the companies WEAS Robotics and ≪Motorika≫, decided to remedy the situation and start a business at the same time. The bionic hand prosthesis he developed is not yet in mass production, but he has already received $100,000 from "Rosnano".
Conventional wisdom says that a start-up company must have perseverance and unshakable belief in its business idea, otherwise no investor will give money no matter what calculations and calculations they present. Ilya Chekh is a different guy - he slightly changes his priorities. During his master's studies at the St. Petersburg University of Information Technology, Mechanics and Optics, he designed planetary vehicles, but then he began to distract himself - he and a few friends carried out private commissions, designed self-made robots, did automation. It didn't bring in much money, and the team wasn't even incorporated as a legal entity. When Chech finished his studies, he tried to go to the Netherlands - he found a vacancy and started negotiations, but it didn't work out. As he admits, he didn't really want that either.
Chech founded WEAS Robotics, where he and his now-former classmates worked on everything from designing machines and manipulators to putting together a program for teaching 3D modeling in high school. Among other things, they repaired the ≪Selenoid, which was built in Skolkovo in 2011 for participation in the international Google Lunar X PRIZE competition.
The entrepreneur came across the topic of medicine more or less by accident. Partner company Cap-touch, which does 3D printing for consumers, decided to 'print' a mechanical prosthetic hand. At first glance, the idea doesn't look all that promising. Serious companies are interested in something else in the field of prosthetics: bionic prostheses, high-tech devices equipped with electric motors and sensors that pick up signals from the muscles remaining after an amputation. Mechanical prostheses or traction prostheses are usually only indirectly commercial in developed countries and are made by small businesses with benefactors' money. The models are often made available to the public in the form of a set of designs with all the required features.
mechanical prostheses
Modular is a construction with joints similar to joints. The latter are actuated mechanically (springs) or electronically. The simplest models only have 1 module, while the most complex models have three.
Leg prostheses allow the patient to retain mobility of the lower leg or knee and provide good stabilization without causing pain. The person gets full freedom of movement and can go where he wants.
Even hip prostheses with processors allow the use of a completely invisible prosthesis. The disabled person gets used to it very quickly and can soon forget about the lack of a leg altogether.
The sports version is a custom-made product that is necessary for people who are used to an active lifestyle. This type of product is custom made, taking into account all anatomical features of the patient.
This design has many advantages, including:
A disadvantage of such a model is the high price. For example, a lower leg prosthesis costs at least 150,000 rubles. How much can a hip prosthesis cost? From 400,000.
A joint prosthesis is suitable for a person whose leg has been completely removed. It is fastened in the hip area. The prosthesis is mounted on a metal base and, at the user's request, is masked with attachments that fully conform to the shape of the limb.
Combination prostheses have the following advantages:
These products make it possible to walk long and fast. Because it can bend, you can do all normal activities, such as walking. B. getting on a bus, climbing stairs, taking a seat, etc.
How much does the articulated version cost? At least 270,000 rubles.
high-tech prostheses
The vacuum prosthesis is another relative novelty. It gets its name from its method of attachment. The device is in fact sucked into the residual limb through a socket and remains in this position until the patient opens the valve.
Wearing the product described has several advantages:
- The vacuum activates the blood supply and prevents muscle wasting;
- reduces the load on the spine;
- stabilizes the support function.
How much does a leg prosthesis like this cost? For the foot, for example, it would cost 100,000 rubles. There is no comparable construction for the hip.
The intelligent version is a state-of-the-art design controlled by a microprocessor. A pneumatic drive is attached to the product, which fully compensates for the function of the lost limb.
Patients with this type of prosthesis can walk at their normal pace without limping. The construction does not aggravate normal fatigue and allows a return to a full life. The price is from 1 000 000 RUB.
Bioprostheses are devices capable of decoding signals from the brain. They are equipped with sensors that read electrical impulses from the nerve endings left in the stump. At first, such prostheses react a little more slowly than real limbs, but patients get used to this delay quite quickly, and later the difference is not noticeable.
How much do you have to pay for this technical marvel? A tibia costs from RUB 1 500 000 and a hip prosthesis around RUB 10 000 000.
How is a prosthetic leg made?
A leg prosthesis above the knee is made in Moscow individually for each person. The professionals follow an algorithm:
- An examination of the stump is performed.
- A plaster cast of the residual limb is taken.
- A thigh prosthesis is then made for the patient to try out.
- In the final phase, a permanent prosthesis is made.
Thigh prostheses are the best models and are easy to learn. In addition, they are easy to maintain.
Today, thigh prostheses are available for older people as well as for younger people. Elderly people in particular suffer most frequently from the loss of limbs as a result of various diseases.
Thigh prostheses, of which pictures can be seen here, are reliable and durable constructions. Once you learn how to use your new limb, you will feel empowered to achieve all your goals again.
Postoperative rehabilitation and complications
After the calf muscle prosthesis is implanted, a hospital stay of 1-2 days is recommended. Pain and slight swelling in the lower leg persist for a week, after which they subside spontaneously. However, it is recommended to walk lightly and wear compression stockings. Daily physical activity is allowed four weeks after lower leg prosthesis replacement, but active sport only after three months. The results of the calf prosthesis implantation can be evaluated after 2 months.
After that, it is recommended not to overload the lower limbs and constantly wear high-heeled shoes.
Like any other surgical procedure, calf muscle prosthesis implantation can be complicated by bleeding, wound abscess, thrombophlebitis or thromboembolism, rough or keloid suture scars. Implant migration, tibial asymmetry, a seroma, or a hematoma in the muscle pocket cannot be ruled out either. These conditions may require revision surgery or removal of the implant and replacement.
Cost of a hip prosthesis in Moscow: what it depends on
You can buy a hip prosthesis in Moscow in a specialized store or order it online in the stores of the leading hip prosthesis manufacturers. You can buy a prosthesis of the right quality and taking into account all the individual peculiarities of the patient, after consulting the doctor. The cost of the prosthesis depends on the material, the manufacturer and the complexity of the fit. Foreign companies produce a wide variety of hip prostheses, which are very expensive and not in demand in Russia. The attending physician can help to choose an endoprosthesis that meets all the criteria.
- metal-metal combination;
- metal-polyethylene combination;
- ceramic-ceramic combination;
- Combination of ceramic and polyethylene.
Each combination has advantages and disadvantages. The endoprostheses are selected individually, taking into account the age and activity level of the patient. The combination of materials has some disadvantages. The combination of ceramics and ceramics carries a high risk of the endoprosthesis breaking under heavy loads on the joint, and the movement is often accompanied by creaking of the endoprosthesis. At the same time, this combination of materials is non-toxic and wear-resistant. Ceramic knee replacements are available with a large head, but another disadvantage is their high cost. This type of endoprosthesis is not suitable for people with osteoporosis.
The metal-to-metal bond is inexpensive, but it is short-lived and has high toxicity from friction products. In addition, the pan is sensitive to tilting, which should not exceed 50°. At the same time, the prosthesis has high mobility, the stability of the material, this type of prosthesis is improved and upgraded every year. This combination of materials is suitable for men with an active lifestyle and is not recommended for women planning a pregnancy.
The combination of ceramic and polyethylene is one of the best options. The endoprosthesis is durable, suitable for all ages and is most often prescribed for the elderly with a sedentary lifestyle. The combination of metal and polyethylene is a friendly option at an affordable price. The pan has an inclination of 90° and is of good quality. Disadvantages of the endoprosthesis - not available with large heads, moderate toxicity, lower wear resistance than other implants. Most complications after endoprosthetics are due to the wrong choice of implant.
Buying a hip prosthesis: price in Moscow
The price of a hip prosthesis in Moscow depends on the manufacturer, the country of production, the complexity of manufacture and the material from which the prosthesis is made. The cost of prostheses from foreign manufacturers is high; depending on the material and complexity of manufacture, hip prostheses can cost from 100,000 rubles and more. The cost of an implant depends on the retailer's margin, the reputation of the manufacturer, the model of the implant, the material, design features, and the complexity of manufacturing.
The cost of endoprosthetics in Moscow depends on the pricing policy of the clinic, the surgeon's qualifications and experience, the cost of preoperative examination, the cost of endoprosthesis and postoperative rehabilitation. You can get qualified advice at a consultation with an orthopedist at the Yusupov Hospital. The doctor will advise on the type of hip prosthesis after a comprehensive examination of the patient and taking into account the individual characteristics of the patient. You can make an appointment for a consultation with the doctor by calling the Yusupov Hospital.
How you can benefit from the prosthesis contingent
Some clinics provide their patients with quotas for joint replacement surgeries. X-rays and other necessary documents must be brought to the hospital. A report is prepared based on these documents and sent to the Ministry of Health. A medical certificate will be issued there. The patient's data will be included in the city's general plan for surgical interventions. Then you have to wait several months for your turn.
If the patient has a limitation, an endoprosthesis, which is available in the clinic, is used. These designs are not always made by leading companies.
The good news is that almost all modern endoprostheses are of high quality. The success of the operation depends half on the skill of the surgeon. If everything is done correctly, even the simplest implant will last for many years.
Social programs as an alternative
Thanks to individual rehabilitation programs (IPR), every patient can have a modern prosthesis at public expense. This can be done at any of the leading hospitals at little or no cost.
One patient, but two different knee replacement techniques: total knee replacement on the right side and unicondylar knee replacement on the left.
They come to the doctor for a consultation, receive IDP documents and are admitted to the hospital. You must purchase the endoprosthesis from the manufacturer at your own expense and pay upon delivery. Joint replacement is performed after 3-4 weeks. After the operation, you create documents to get the money back. You will be reimbursed for the costs within one month. Feedback from patients treated free of charge in this way is often positive.
Preparation for knee arthroplasty
- X-ray examination, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and CT (computed tomography);
- ECG;
- Preoperative examinations (list to be discussed individually with the patient).
To prepare for knee arthroplasty, a consultation is required:
If you have a chronic medical condition, you should consult a specialist before having knee replacement surgery.
How is the operation performed?
There are two types of knee replacements based on the amount of surgery required:
In an arthroplasty, the knee joint capsule is opened, the articular surface and bone are exposed, and the osteochondral tissue is removed. Zimmer titanium implants are used in its place. A drainage tube is then inserted and the joint sewn up.
The duration of the procedure depends on the type of knee replacement. On average, the entire knee surgery takes between 40 minutes and two hours. In most cases, endoprostheses are inserted under general or spinal anesthesia.
types of prostheses
Depending on the location of the injury and the part of the limb removed, a prosthesis may be used:
There are the following types of amputation of the leg above the knee joint:
- The limb is removed at the level of the knee joint;
- The limb is amputated up to 1/3 of the thigh, leaving a long stump;
- The limb is severed up to the middle of the femur or along its entire length (along the upper edge of the thigh);
- The entire limb, including the hip joint, is amputated.
Depending on the condition of the residual limb and the hip joint, a prosthesis is selected and fixed with the help of bandages, lap belts, belts or vacuum. Combined fixation is also used. When choosing a model, the following characteristics are taken into account:
- ease of construction;
- use of natural, environmentally friendly materials;
- functionality;
- the appearance of a healthy limb.
Cosmetic prostheses (prosthetic foot, missing toe phalanges) are also made to optically conceal the defect.
Modular
Modular prostheses are devices with integrated joints that replace joints and take over their function. In these systems, the motorized manipulation can be carried out by a spring or a microprocessor.
Such prostheses consist of one, two or three modules. The latter replace the entire limb and provide all the functionality of the lost leg.
- the ability to move freely (with the help of an intelligent control system);
- good mobility;
- stability when standing;
- no discomfort when sitting;
- Simulation of a healthy limb.
prosthetic techniques
The fitting technique of the prosthesis depends on the type of amputation. Prostheses are distinguished as follows:
- Bionic - functioning through the conscious effort of the user, developed with advanced technology;
- Mechanical prostheses – are widespread and used to replace lost functions, but have negative effects on the spine with prolonged use;
- Cosmetic – allows to visually hide existing defects and imitate the full appearance of the leg.
Based on the fitting technique, the units are determined:
Comparison of fixed and removable dentures.
Fixed dentures are the best type of prosthetic care in terms of safety, aesthetics and comfort. Fixed dentures allow you to have new teeth as if they were your own.
Criteria: | Fixed dentures | Fixed dentures |
---|---|---|
Safe brackets | Weak (may detach) | High |
restoration of chewing ability | at a level of 30% | 100% |
aesthetics | Acceptable | High |
Distribution of the chewing load | Bad | Complete |
bone loss | Decrease by up to 2 mm per year | No |
FAQ
Removable and fixed braces are treated differently. Removable braces must be taken out, cleaned with non-abrasive toothpastes and treated with special solutions. Fixed dentures should be brushed and flossed twice a day just like your own teeth. I also recommend visiting the dentist for a professional cleaning (every six months).
Can I get a bridge without having to grind down a healthy support body?
Yes, it is technically possible to restore multiple lost teeth without grinding down and preparing the brace. This technique is called adhesive prosthetics. However, this method is currently only used as a temporary solution (up to 3 years).
How many years can a tooth survive after nerve removal?
If the root canals are properly treated under the microscope and the problem tooth is restored with a crown or inlay, it can survive for another 10-20 years.
A piece of tooth broke off - can I leave it untreated?
Even a seemingly harmless microfracture (especially a chip) that is left untreated can lead to the development of pulpitis or periodontitis and eventual loss of the tooth unit.
