Children's shoe sizes by age
In order to choose the right shoes for your child, you need to know how to find the right size. This can easily be done using the shoe size charts for different countries.
In Europe, the basis is the Stichmaster system. Its calculation basis is the Sticha. This unit is equated with 2/3 cm. According to the gauge, the shoe size is not based on the length of the foot, but on the length of the sole of the shoe. Russian children's shoe sizes are often given in the metric sizing system.
Size chart for Russian children's shoes
Russian children's shoe sizes differ from European sizes because Russia uses a metric system of units. The table with the foot length in the right column and the corresponding children's shoe sizes in centimeters in the left column will help you to determine the correct size.
RF children's shoe size | foot length(cm) |
16 | 9,5 |
17 | 10,5 |
18 | 11 |
19 | 11,5 |
20 | 12,2 |
21 | 13 |
22 | 13,6 |
23 | 14,2 |
24 | 14,8 |
25 | 15,5 |
26 | 16,3 |
27 | 16,9 |
28 | 17,3 |
29 | 18,2 |
30 | 18,8 |

36 | 22,6 |
37 | 23,5 |
38 | 24,2 |
39 | 24,8 |

The metric system is convenient because it does not require additional calculations. The size is easily determined: from the toe to the heel, the length of the foot is measured in cm. For example, a newborn baby's foot length is typically 9.5 cm. Shoe size 16 is the first shoe size. This can be useful when knitting or when buying shoes.

How to measure your child correctly
- Be sure to measure your child's height before checking the age column, even if you have recently measured. Children grow quickly, so this must be taken into account.
- The chest circumference should also be measured with a measuring tape.
- When measuring the hips and waist with a tape measure, it is important that the child does not pull in the tummy.
Note that tights and lingerie are not age appropriate in any store. It is therefore important that you as a parent make the right choice and do not regret your purchase later. Tights, for example, are best chosen based on the child's foot and not their height, as tights may be too short or too big for the child.
Socks should, of course, be chosen according to the size of the foot, as a rule, a child's foot grows by 1-2 centimeters every year.
From this it can be concluded that when choosing baby clothes you should not only rely on the size range and age information provided by the manufacturer. You should choose clothes for your baby based on your child's preferences, quality of materials and fit, and individual sizes.
Keep in mind that manufacturers' sizes do not necessarily match the children's sizes in our charts. Therefore, it is best to refer to the parameters of your baby.

How do I find the right shoe size for my child?
If you prefer shoes from USA, England and Europe, you should have a shoe size chart to choose the right size. On the right side of the table is the size of the foot in centimeters and inches (inches), on the left side the American (US), European (Euro) and British (UK) size.
What is the difference between European, English, American and Russian sizes?
When people buy shoes from the UK, they often look at European sizes and think they fit well. However, this is absolutely not the case. In Russia, the metric system of units is used, in which meters, millimeters, centimeters and kilometers are indicated. As for English measurements, imperial units are used to calculate them: inches, feet, yards, miles. Therefore, they should not be compared with each other in any way.
If you want to buy children's shoes from USA, Europe or UK, you should use the corresponding tables. This is the only way to get the right shoe in the right size.
Buy children's shoes at your nearest Lera store.
Common mistakes when choosing
It can be difficult to take toddlers to a shoe store to try them on. Of course, an online shop can help. Parents often try to determine the size by eye, but they don't always succeed. How do you choose shoes for your child? Notice the mistakes adults make when shopping.
- Try on the shoes when the child is lying or sitting. Sizing should be determined while standing, since the foot lengthens by 3-6 mm when the entire body weight is transferred to it.
- Measure the foot with tape. It is a good idea to trace the foot on paper, holding the pencil vertically. The child should be in a standing position.
- Try to determine the size reserve by placing your index finger between the child's heel and the bottom of the shoe. This puts pressure on the foot and it moves forward with the toe.
Tips for choosing winter boots
When buying children's shoes, it is important to consider the age, the time of year, the purpose of the pair and the preferences of the child. Take note of the key features to look out for and learn how to choose the right shoe.
MATERIAL
Natural leather has long been considered the most comfortable, durable and correct material for children. And that's right. It is flexible, durable, breathable, heat-retaining and moisture-wicking. Over time, leather shoes will mold to the shape of the wearer's foot, which is very comfortable. But that's why it's not a good idea to wear a pair of real leather shoes with other kids.
Many synthetic materials have been developed today that are in no way inferior to the properties of leather. So-called high-tech materials, including membrane boots. Such a pair is light, strong and durable. The boots don't get wet, but at the same time they are breathable and keep you warm. Manufacturers actively use such materials in winter and mid-season products. Some modern shoes can withstand temperatures up to minus 35 degrees and will not let your feet freeze even during long walks.
Textiles are not bad either. Jeans or linen are comfortable for children's feet. Shoes made of these materials are soft and light, but they are only suitable for summer. In addition, textiles quickly become dirty and wear out.
Leather substitutes, non-breathable plastics and other cheap materials are not suitable for children's feet. Avoid them.
SHAPE
The shape refers to the parts of the shoe: heel, toe, instep, sole and buckles. Examine each element closely to find the right shoe for you.
SOLE
The job of the sole of a shoe is to support the ankle. It must be closed and rigid so that the child's heel stays in the correct position and does not fall inwards. Shoes with open heels are not recommended for children under the age of 5. Sandals with thin straps should only be worn for a short time, e.g. B. on the beach worn.
How to determine your child's shoe size
To find your child's shoe size, measure your child's foot. When measuring, the foot must be on a firm surface.
Place a sheet of paper on a hard surface;
● trace the outline of both feet with a pencil while holding it upright;
Measure the resulting 'footprints' from the heel to the tip of the big toe.
Sometimes parents do not consider it necessary to know the size of both feet. This is a mistake: the difference in foot length can be as little as 0.5-0.7cm even in infancy. If you notice the difference, you should try making the foot bigger. It is possible that they will even out after a few months.
For infants, you can measure the foot with a thick thread on a scale and then hold the thread against a ruler. A few millimeters will be lost in the process, but the overall result will be accurate.
Once you have determined the length of your child's feet, you can use a size chart to choose the shoes. If you don't have a spreadsheet handy, a calculator will come in handy. Now Russian manufacturers use the Stichmassovoy system, in which one stitch is equal to 0.66 cm.
You need to determine the length of the foot, it is calculated on size 20 children's shoes. To do this, 20*0.66=13.2. So the insole length of the shoe is 13.2 cm. You can also measure the reciprocal: For example, a child has a leg length of 18 cm. We add an extra 1 centimeter and get: 19:0.66=28.78. So you can choose size 29.
The table is all the more convenient because most foreign (European and American) manufacturers use a different system of measurements.
Useful recommendations
How to tell if a shoe is loose or tight
Wide children's shoes can be measured by the position of the insole, which is pushed back in relation to the arch of the foot. A clearance in the insole of more than 1 cm indicates a loose length.
Tight shoes can also be identified by the supinated position that is not under the arch of the foot. In addition, in such shoes the child bends his toes, and traces of tissue compression appear on the heel.
In the correct model, the arch of the foot is above the instep and the edge is about 1 cm. It is advisable to measure the edge every month.
How to measure closed children's shoes?
With closed shoes it is more difficult to determine the position of the foot. If the insole can be removed, place the child's foot on it and check its position.
● Non-removable insole: As for sizing, draw around the foot and cut out the 'footprint' of both feet. Put the footprint in the shoe and feel. How much space is left?
● When you put your child's shoes on, feel where the edge of the big toe is.
Error in determining the right shoe
Use the toe to gauge how much room there is left. It is difficult to measure the range in this way because the child slides the foot from back to front under pressure. It is easier to determine the margin in centimeters with the help of a trace cut out of paper.
– Try the product on your child in a sitting or lying position. There can be a full centimeter difference between the foot hanging in the air and the foot lying on the ground!
Rules for measuring children's feet
A child's feet are formed by the age of six. Before that, it consists of cartilage and a layer of fat that helps reduce the painful sensation of wearing tight shoes. However, this also makes it difficult to assess the well-being of the child and to recognize in time that the foot is not developing properly.
A child's foot grows at different rates at different ages. By the age of 2-3 years, he will grow about 2-3 sizes. At preschool age, he grows about 2 sizes a year, and at school age - 1-2 sizes. One size corresponds to about 5 mm. That's why it's important to monitor the growth of your child's foot and note the changes about every 2-3 months.
In order to choose the right shoe size, your child's foot must be measured correctly. This is best done in the evening when the feet are sufficiently 'barefoot'. When choosing summer shoes, it is best to measure barefoot or with thin socks, when choosing winter shoes with tights or thick socks. To do this you should:
1. Lay your child on a piece of paper on a flat, hard surface. 2.
2. Trace the outline of each foot by holding a pencil or pen straight up.
3 Using a ruler, measure the distance between the edge of the big toe and the heel.
A difference of 6 mm between the length of the right and left foot is normal. However, when choosing shoes, you should use a larger measurement. If a toddler cannot stand yet, the length of the foot can be measured with a ruler.
The result should be converted to millimeters and checked against a table. Most manufacturers use the metric system to determine the sizes of the shoes they produce. Only in some cases they use the gauge system where 1 gauge equals 66mm.
Checking the correct shoe size
If a shoe is not the right size and there is no reserve in the shoe, it will not fit properly. This is more difficult to see on closed models, since on open models such as sandals or heeled sandals, it is immediately apparent that the toe protrudes beyond the edge of the sole.
A second indication that the shoe does not fit properly is the position of the foot in relation to the insole. In 'outgrown' models, the insole is usually not under the arch of the foot. In this position, she is unable to prevent the development of flat feet, but at the same time causes toe abrasions and an abnormal gait.
If an adult child can judge for himself how comfortable he is in the sneakers he has chosen, then how to choose closed shoes for toddlers? There are several ways to tell if a pair is the right fit:
1. Use an insole. Take out the product you like and place it on the floor while your child stands on it barefoot. This allows you to determine the relationship between the length of the insole and your child's foot. The toes and heel should be in the right place.
2. on a cardboard outline. The child must stand barefoot on the box. Draw the outline of the foot, cut it out and insert it into the chosen shoe model. The heel determines the presence of the reserve.
3 By placing the big toe. Ask your child to try on a shoe model or sneaker that he likes. While standing, try where the big toe is. This way you can determine whether there is still room in the shoe.
Many parents try to size a shoe by sliding their toe between the back of the shoe and the child's heel. This is a bad practice because the child can pinch their toe and automatically adjust the foot.
Children's size chart by age
You can determine your child's foot size yourself. However, this is not the only parameter for choosing the right footwear. Other factors to consider are the child's fullness, instep, and other characteristics. The size chart for children's shoes can also be created according to the child's age for easier selection.

Shoe size chart for teens and adults
During puberty (after the age of 10), children's feet develop even more slowly, but they continue to form. The difference in foot development between girls and boys is even greater, with foot growth stopping at 12-13 years for girls and 15-16 years for boys.
The size chart is usually divided into two sizes, for men and for women. They are numbered the same and differ only in the 'sizes'. For women, the numbers 33 to 41 in the index system are relevant, for men the numbers 39 to 46.
Adult shoe sizes
It is not possible to establish a correlation between height and age. The development of the foot ends at a different point in time for every teenager and there is no standard. Therefore, you should always measure the length of your feet before ordering shoes online.
In this article we explain how to measure your shoes and determine your size. Ideally, the difference between your measurements in centimeters and the length of the insole of your stilettos should not be greater than the decoration surcharge specified by a particular manufacturer.
The shoe is small - when the insole starts to wear out.
The shoe is big - if the toe curls up.
A shoe is narrow - if it runs out at the side.
Choosing the right shoe size for children
- Feet should be measured while standing to determine the maximum length and width of the foot in its natural position;
- The evening is ideal, as the feet swell and get a little bigger during this time;
- Depending on the season when the shoes are worn, the measurement should be taken in a thin or thick sock;
- Be sure to measure both feet - they can be different lengths so the shoe should be adjusted to the larger size.
Remember that the child's foot moves inside the shoe as they walk, so length and width may vary. It is better to add a few millimeters to the measurement - then the purchased pair will fit exactly.
Measure feet at home
- Place your child's foot on a piece of paper or card;
- Trace the outline with a pencil, holding the pencil as close to the edge of the foot as possible;
- Measure the length of this outline between the two outermost points of the outline.
This gives you an idea of the length of the insole and can be used as a guide when choosing footwear. You can see the measurement process in the video:
When shopping in the store, it is advisable to cut out the resulting blanks and compare them with the insole of the chosen pair. It is best to leave 5-10mm of slack so your child can wear their new shoes as comfortably as possible. The size of the insole in the different systems (metric, inch and scale) can be found in the tables in this article.
Rules for buying children's shoes online
While you can see and try on your child's new shoes in a brick-and-mortar store, you don't have that option when buying from online stores.
In this case, you should consult the children's shoe chart on the online store's website before making your final choice, because some manufacturers sometimes deviate from the reference size.
Don't forget that children grow very quickly and your child's foot size can change in as little as two to three weeks. It is therefore important to take measurements before making any purchase.
When choosing the right shoe size, don't forget the functional allowance. This means that the length of the insole of the shoe, bootie or sandal should be 1-1.5 cm longer than the length of your child's foot. This is to ensure that the child can walk comfortably in it.
In addition to the size, the width of the shoe and the height of the instep also play an important role. Since not all manufacturers indicate these parameters, when buying children's shoes it is better to choose those in which they can be adjusted: sandals with Velcro, lace-up shoes, shoes with a rubber sole, etc.
How to choose the right shoes for children?
- Go to the store with an old insole from a shoe that fits your child. If you are looking for a new pair, simply compare this insole with yours. This way you know how well the shoe fits your child. You can also make a shape yourself by tracing the outline of your child's foot on cardboard and then cutting out a piece;
- Fashion is also important. Fashion should be influenced by the color and print of the shoe, but not the shape of the shoe. Children's shoes should be ergonomic. They should not have 'extravagances' such as a pointed toe;
- It's no secret that many items for children are very expensive, and shoes are no exception. But remember that you can save on many things, but not on the quality of children's sandals and shoes. It is better to buy simple things or fewer toys for your child, but his shoes should always be top quality as it largely depends on your child's healthy development.
- 'Baby' shoes or sandals should be virtually weightless. A child just beginning to walk will refuse even to move in heavy shoes, which are fundamentally inconvenient;
- High-quality summer shoes, mostly made of genuine leather, so that children's feet are comfortable and don't sweat. For winter boots and shoes, it is better to buy waterproof material with natural sheepskin. In such shoes the child will be safe from the cold and thawing weather and the puddles associated with it;
- Children's shoes should have a sole that extends slightly beyond the shoe or boot to protect the foot when hitting a curb or falling. At the same time, they should be non-slip and have a good grip. This applies not only to winter but also to summer products, because children's sandals should have a good 'grip' on the asphalt;
- All possible fasteners should not only fit well on the foot, but also be easy to use. Otherwise the child cannot put the shoes on themselves;
- And, of course, you must not forget about the general requirements for the quality of shoes: all seams should be well finished, leaks, protruding threads, asymmetry, etc. are unacceptable.
